So Undergrad Thesis Work

Is more focused. I have some ideas but it depends on various things like finding faculty support, etc.

• Censorship of Sex in Lit in the 20th Century. I think it would be interesting to deal with subversive lit and see not only why stories like these were written, but how the audience reacted, why they were censored, or at least attempted to be censored, etc. It STILL may be a little too broad, but its narrowed a lot further from “Sex in Lit” in general. I would be reading things like Lolita, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, etc etc, subject to change. Are instances of sex censorship more common than censorship of other material? 
• Exploring the origins of the slasher film’s “Final Girl,” aka female protagonist, in Gothic lit. I don’t know how I feel about this one yet. Originally I was playing around with the role of the Final Girl in the horror/slasher film and her progressions. One of my instructors suggested that I could tie this back into literature, which I thought was interesting. The instructor told me she was willing to be my faculty adviser on this project, but it depends on whether or not the Department head will accept her as adviser since she is not a full professor. I am also very unfamiliar with Gothic lit.
• Some backups would be exploring themes or philosophies in a particular author, which sounds standard. Virginia Woolf would be awesome, as would Flannery O’Connor. I’m still working on Moby-Dick, but slowly. Or perhaps some narrowed theme in American literature. I love naturalism as well as modernism… who knows.

I’m meeting with a professor next week to discuss a possible independent study for some Medieval/Renaissance lit. I am excited, we’ll see!

I need to write a research proposal for my Evil Children’s class tonight and I have no idea what I am writing about yet. Probably some condensed version of the Final Girl paper, exploring her recent descents into madness where it is revealed that SHE is the killer. Honestly this has happened so often in the last ten years. I may also turn to the female seductress, examining her role in movies like Teeth and Jennifer’s Body.
